Well, the band has really outdone itself here for totally un-freakin’-translatable lyrics. The whirlpool-code headphones? Actually, no, that’s the coiled-cord headphones. Japanese is a wonderful language.

I just found this translation sitting on my hard drive. I must have done it last year some time, because it wasn’t very good. I fixed it up and ran it through my new lyric-wrangling process. This is one of my favorite songs.

Mirrorball

Miss Hiroko explained the “kuchi ga sakete mo” bit: apparently this is a phrase that means something like “my mouth is shut, and even if you cut it open (as in, like, slicing my cheeks open) I still won’t say it”. There is a legendary Japanese type of ghost called “kuchisake onna” which is a woman with her mouth all cut open on both sides and blood dripping all over who shows up and goes, “DO YOU THINK I’M PRETTY!?!?”. So, now you can have some new nightmares with that one. Cheers!

Chicago

Why clammbon decided to name this song after my home town, I’ll never know. It suggests they’ve been there, which makes me wish I’d known they were coming to visit so I could offer to show them around. :D There are three versions of this song: the perky single version seen in the music video, the slower version on the album (subtitled yamiagari, “convalescence”), and Re-Re-Chicago, on the second Re-clammbon album.

Daihinmin

Daihinmin is a card game played in Japan. Part of the strategy is staying neutral for as long as possible. The “revolution” mentioned in verse 3 is a move that causes the values of all the cards to be reversed, thus totally turning the game around.

Kimi wa Boku no Mono

This song is directly responisble for my discovery of clammbon. The single had just come out during my first trip to Japan, and a 15-second commercial for it sent me to the CD store without knowing so much as the band’s name. If they had not had a display with a little TV playing the video, I might never have heard of clammbon at all.

The video for this song seems to have been created by a director with some experience in selling big-time pop acts. The whole band looks way more glamorous than they ever do otherwise, and Miss Ikuko is even done up in pink lip-gloss and white eye-makeup! Whoa!

Doggie & Maggie

clammbon likes wordplay, and this song is as good a specimen as any. It’s also a good exhibit of how they like to write rather capriciously, often using the “wrong” character set for the words in question; each 4-syllable ki-word is written in katakana regardless of how it is “supposed” to be written.

The original version of this song, on the Pan to Mitsu wo Meshiagare maxi-single, includes a catchy English crowd-vocal section in the middle.

Itakunai Itakunai

It became apparent pretty early on that clammbon lyrics were not going to be easy to translate into English. It’s fine trying to understand the feelings and meanings, but expressing them accurately and concisely in another language is tough. I’m doing my best, here. More help from Andy on this one, too. “Itakunai” can mean “it doesn’t hurt” or “don’t want to be”, and this song uses both meanings.

Hanare Banare

In my translation quest, I’ve started at the beginning. This is clammbon’s major debut, their first big-time single and their first video. The title of this song is rather hard to translate, as its meaning is something like, “the state of being separated from one another”, which doesn’t flow very well. Andy Szymanski, good buddy and pro video-game localizer at Tecmo, helped out a ton on this song, and proposed this English title.

Pan to Mitsu wo Meshiagare

This was probably the hardest song to translate on this whole album. Special thanks to Miss H. M. for her help. The tendency of the Japanese language to omit subjects and objects really became a problem in this song. I think these lyrics foreshadow the abstractness of future clammbon albums.

Note that there are two somewhat different studio versions: the original on Kujirammbon and the more polished version on JP.
